In the current position I’m in today, I see my role as much more than just a special education teacher. I am blessed to work in a smaller school where I work closely with other teachers, as well as connect with them on a personal level. Being able to work at various levels and areas gives me the opportunity to use creativity and learn different ways to make each classroom inclusive for all students. Through my masters’ courses, I have been exposed to many different ways that students learn. As the world keeps changing, the education system needs to as well. In order to ensure my students are receiving the best education possible, I know I must adapt to these external changes and help in the process of changing the system. The best way I can do so is to expand upon the network available to me, introduce and educate the various technologies available for my students, and motivate my students to become collaborative learners. In this way, I hope to forever be a resource for my students, parents, colleagues, and administration.

Network Resource

Something that we focused on through my masters’ course was creating and expanding our networks. This was something that I was not aware that I needed to develop, but it ended up being an important area for me as a continued learner. An expansive network allows me to pull an endless amount of information from a variety of different resources and outlets. One of the ways I plan to do this is by using twitter to learn from educators in different domains. From learning more about safe technology practices to understanding and embracing diversity, twitter puts me in contact with these education professionals and allows me to share their information with parents, colleagues, and administration.

Technology Resource

One main thing I have found over this year is that technology can be temperamental. A student will forget their password, a computer will not charge correctly, and more often than not, something will not work. In all of that mess, students can become frustrated, but learn to become patient and adaptive with technology. There is so much to be learned by knowing how to efficiently use technology, such as learning to collaborate and develop a presentation for an actual project. Throughout my masters’ course I have been exposed to just a glimpse of these tools. One main resource that I want to use and share with my colleagues is Cool Tools for School. This is essentially a guide for teachers that lists the various technologies available to be used and demonstrates how to best use them. I plan to use this site in order to be a resource to my colleagues and provide them with the information needed to teach with new technologies. This resource is one of many tools I plan to use, as I ultimately want to implement new ways of using technology to better teach our students.

Learner Resource

To prepare students for their future, educators need to be teaching our students to be twenty-first century learners. A twenty-first century learner is a student that develops their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills through the use of technology while simultaneously learning their key subjects. I realize our education system still holds tight to lecture and assessment and that my colleagues and administration need more exposure to twenty-first century learning. My goal is to be a resource and example for my colleagues by consciously collaborating with each grade level teacher and helping lesson plan a unit with twenty-first century learning as our focus. Students best learn and develop their innovation skills through collaborating and creating with a purpose. As I’ve watched my colleagues incorporate more and more project based learning, I am delighted in seeing how our students step up to the challenge and become more excited about learning. As my students’ ally, I will continue to explore and find better ways to introduce twenty-first century learning and help better prepare them for their future.

Forever Resource

I realize that I may not be an expert in all areas of what I teach, especially since I work with such a wide range, but I do know that I can be an expert resource. I want to offer ways to help my students, parents, colleagues, and administration achieve success with the use of technology. I want to help parents understand how technology can help their child, along with the cautions they should take with using it. I want to find easy tech products that can help my colleagues with their students and also with their workload. I also want to help my school’s administration with the most up-to-date information and ideas to improve our school. With these goals, I am committed to be a forever learner and a forever resource to my students.
